PRO TIP: Bring the Outdoors In

With a stronger focus on health and wellbeing, there’s also an increased interest in bringing the outdoors into the home. Having natural looks and materials in your interiors helps relieve stress and blood pressure, soothes the senses, and creates the feeling of an oasis at home. Here are five great ways to bring nature into your home!

1. Color Your World

The idea of using colors found in nature isn’t new, but it’s gaining in popularity as we better understand the effect color has on us emotionally and even physically. Paint company Farrow & Ball introduced a color series last year based on that concept, called Colour By Nature. It’s a collaboration with London’s Natural History Museum that creates colors found in nature, from the exact hue of rocks in a field to the palette of a butterfly’s wing. The color I used in the dining room above reminds me of the Caribbean Sea. Now that’s an inspiring shade!

2. Material World

Using textures and materials that are organic and natural is another great way to create that outdoor vibe. Raffia, stone, natural wood, and woven grasses makes you feel that you’re in a fresh-air destination. The woven stools above have great texture that looks good and feels good.

3. Fresh Take

Plants and fresh flowers may seem like a no-brainer, but too often we forget how important it is to have organic items in our home’s decor. If you’re intimidated by live plants, try cut flowers. Or think out of the box and use other items found in nature, like crystals, shells, driftwood, and more.

4. Environmental Inspiration

Another great way to let nature into your indoor rooms is using motifs inspired by outdoor scenery. Think florals, vines, animals, butterflies, clouds, or any other earthy patterns. I created a framed wall in my client’s dining room that showcases a handpainted scene of peonies and birds. It’s fresh and lovely - adding a gorgeous focal point for the room.

5. Let the Sun Shine In

Nothing will lift your spirits more than natural light. So take advantage of this fabulous resource by opening up your windows with shades and sheers. If you’re planning a remodel, use the largest windows that you can, and maybe even consider a skylight! The more natural light you can bring into a space, the better your mood will be year-round.
