House Tour: A Classic Tudor
When my clients purchased a lovely classic Tudor home in Charlotte, NC, they wanted to upgrade and update the tired and aged interiors, while still honoring the house’s fabulous history in this fast-paced city. These clients also love to entertain, so I wanted to give them gorgeous public spaces that would allow guests to feel at home. And they needed two home offices, since both of them were working from home during the pandemic. Let’s take a tour through the solution-filled, and lovely, interiors.
In the living room, a gorgeous piece of art is a focal point, seen above on the right. We used a large piece of original art by an Italian artist that one of the clients received from his father as our jumping off point for the design of the space.
I reworked the dated Mediterranean fireplace with a light, cast stone, custom mantle. A happy accident occurred when the contractor painted the interior of the fireplace the wrong color, but it worked perfectly with our overall scheme and now it pulls the room’s color story together.
In the dining room, I added a hand-knotted rug, a modern light fixture, and soft window treatments. For extra visual interest, I also had the ceiling wallpapered, which gives it a gorgeous shimmer when the light hits it.
The window above is flanked by art from Italy. And I had custom curiosity-style cloches made for the marble console tables.
“His” office was a blank canvas. I created a custom work area that allows him to work on either the desk or the wall-hung credenza. I wallpapered the walls in a navy grasscloth and painted the built-ins and trim to match for a moody, masculine space. Then I added the sleek, mid-century chaise for a reading nook.
This room also serves as additional storage and a dressing room, so I designed custom mid-century-style drawers for additional clothing storage that is hidden in plain sight.
“Her” office is also a multi-purpose space. The room converts to a guest-house bedroom, a home office, and a quiet space to enjoy a cup of tea. I created those multiple uses for the room by offering zones, including a desk and work area and a seating area with sleeper sofa that can easily transition into a guest room, as needed.
Another zone is this coffee area, with a bistro table and chairs. Perfect for a morning brew, an afternoon tea, or even a glass of wine at the end of the workday.
I also updated the guest house bathroom with a fun wallpaper, then painted the vanity, and added new lighting, a mirror, and bold hardware. The result is a look that’s soft and feminine with a bohemian vibe.
In the home’s powder room (below), I loved the existing stone vanity, so it definitely had to stay. I updated the lighting, mirror, and wallpaper, and then pulled the paint color from the sconces to the ceiling for a fun accent touch.
Lastly, we customized their outdoor living area by painting the brick walls to lighten the overall vibe and give the feel of a Mediterranean villa, adding wall sculptures that mimic sea urchins over the fireplace.
I also updated the outdoor lighting, softened their outdoor furniture with rugs and pillows, and introduced additional seating at their dining area for dinner parties.
I love this revamped Tudor and can’t wait to see how my clients entertain in the outdoor spaces this summer! If your home needs a makeover, we’d love to talk to you. Just give my team a call!
All the best,
Kara
