Mixing Antiques Into Your Modern Home

Antiques are incredible storytellers for your home. They can tell guests something about your family’s history. They can showcase what you love and what means something to you. And they add a lot of visual interest to a home. But mixing an antique or vintage piece in with your more modern furnishings can be tricky. So here are three rules to follow for making the most of that mix.

Make a Statement

If you have a truly stunning piece, let it be the star of the room. In the living space I designed above, that gorgeous table draws all eyes. It also adds some weight to the soft furnishings that surround it. And it shares the spotlight with a fabulous antique footstool that I recovered, too.

Balance Lines and Curves

Many antiques have great curves, like the breakfront style buffet above. To counterbalance that shaping, I used a starburst mirror created with straight rods, as well as the sharp lined lamps on either side. It offers a more visually pleasing look and a more modern statement.

Lighten the Mood

Darker finishes on some antiques can weigh down a room and make it seem too heavy. When my client wanted to use this stunning antique dining table, I created a colorful background so the tables finish could really shine. A beautiful wall covering, bold blue draperies, and very modern lighting all worked beautifully together for a more transitional mix.
