Pro Tips for Dealing with the TV

One of the ongoing discussions between client couples is whether or not to hide the television. Often one partner will want a giant screen in at least one room in the house, and the other doesn’t want the “big black hole” staring at them when it isn’t in use. Everyone who lives in the home should be happy with their rooms, so of course we’re going to put a large TV in for whoever wants it. But there are some pro tricks I have that let us keep the TV out of sight when that’s required. Let’s take a look.

Clever Cabinetry

If you look at the bookcase in my Woodland project above, you might have a tough time finding the TV, but I promise it’s there! We created a door out of faux book spines that folds back to reveal the screen. We can also do this with artwork that covers a TV hanging on the wall or with other clever design ideas. It’s a great way to make everyone in the house happy.

The Art of Television

If you haven’t heard of the Frame TV from Samsung, it has been a godsend to designers. Can you see where it is in the living room of my Fenton Place project below? It’s the gorgeous art over the fireplace. This TV allows you to select from thousands of works of art to display when the TV isn’t in use, and you can even select a frame that helps fool the eye. This is a “have your cake and eat it, too” example that pleases the giant-screen fans and the home decor fans.

The Home Theater Experience

For those who are really into their streaming services and gaming, I always suggest a full home theater experience. For a home in the Tennessee mountains, we elevated the back of the room to create that theater seating, but with much more comfortable custom upholstery. With a projector in the ceiling and a large screen, this room becomes an instant movie-going experience.
