Project Profile: A Multifunctional Mud Room
Mud rooms are the new must-have spaces in homes today. They’re the perfect place to drop shoes and bags, store sports equipment, and help you keep dirt and germs from entering the main living spaces. In one of my current projects, I decided to make the mud room a multifunctional space that would work for every member of the family - including one with four legs!
In a blog post a few weeks ago, I told you how you can make your home pet proof. That’s the idea I had in mind when I began this mud room design. I wanted the small space to have a big impact, so I included a dog washing station, a built-in dog crate, and a pull-out feeding area.
The key to a great dog washing station is to elevate it off the ground. That will keep my client’s back from giving out when Fido needs a bath! And I included a detachable shower head that will get everything clean from nose to tail.
Selecting the tile for the dog bath was important. I wanted to have a a tile on the walls that would have some shape and movement to add interest. And the floor is made of recycled glass, which is great to help avoid slipping and is eco-friendly. I also did not select any natural stones, but instead went with tile that would not have to be maintained and that would not hold stains. Even the grout I selected has sealer built in and is mold/mildew resistant. If you’ve ever had a muddy dog in a bathtub, you know why that’s important!
I absolutely love the wallpaper we selected for the walls above the dog washing station. It’s the Best Friend pattern from Thibaut, and it is designed to make the client’s dog feel right at home.
The room is going to look fabulous, but I also added so much functionality. The built-in dog crate will keep their four-legged friend safe while the family runs errands. And a pull-out drawer under the dog bath will put the food and water out of way when it isn’t needed.
