House Tour: A Sophisticated Vacation Destination
I was excited to work on this coastal project when my clients approached me because it’s a vacation home that this family loves. But also, it was a great time to reconnect with one of the family members who used to work with me five years ago! With her acting as project manager for the coastal home, it made the job so much more fun.
For her, the home on Figure Eight Island off the North Carolina coast was full of memories and nostalgia. So when her family decided to renovate the vacation home, they wanted to continue their family legacy and traditions in the house as they enjoyed it as children, instead of tearing it down and rebuilding a much larger home.
Their grandfather was one of the first to build on the exclusive island near Wilmington, NC. That original house was destroyed in 2018 during Hurricane Florence and could have become a tear-down then, but the third generation of the family decided to keep the original framing to rebuild.
We were lucky enough to have the original plans to review when we started remodeling. The kitchen was extended, two bathrooms were added so every bedroom would have an en-suite, and a powder room was created for guests.
The 3,000-square-foot home is modern and airy, with a contemporary take on the sea and sound just yards away.
