Taking a Seat in the Kitchen
The kitchen is the hub of the home, now more than ever. It’s where we gather to cook, eat meals, do homework, and connect with others on Zoom. With this room getting a workout from our families, selecting the right seating is key. Here are my go-to stool selections for the perfect seat!
When Comfort Is King
If your guests and family members love to eat or hang out in the kitchen a lot, then you want to provide a comfortable seat for them. An upholstered barstool is definitely the right choice in this case. But I also like to pay attention to the details, like having a rail around the bottom of the stool to rest your feet. And be sure you leave at least 12-14 inches of knee space under the counter. You don’t want people hitting their knees constantly as they pull up to the counter or island.
Taking a Turn
The stools above are incredibly comfortable, but they have an added bonus, too - they swivel. Being able to turn and talk to the person next to you is great, and that swivel also helps you get up and down from your seat easily. I’m careful to use performance fabrics on stools like these, as well. That helps you avoid stains and messes as people are eating or working here.
Working It
The main purpose of the kitchen, of course, is as a work area. For my clients who want both seating and clear counters, I like to use comfortable stools that will slide out of sight, like in the the kitchen above. That keeps the area open for cooking and cleaning, but also gives you a great seat for meals and homework.
Task Seating
For some of my clients, seating isn’t a top priority in the kitchen. They may have an adjacent breakfast nook, or they may not have enough room for several seats at an island or bar. But I still like to give them a stool or two for task seating or to accommodate someone keeping them company in the kitchen. The lucite stools I selected above are perfect for this idea because they blend in, practically hiding in plain sight. But they’re ready to offer great functionality when it’s needed, too.
