Two Table Styles for Holiday Entertaining

I love the holidays - it’s a time to slow down and reconnect with friends and family. And this year feels different. We’re all cautiously planning events again for small groups, from cocktail parties, to Christmas brunch, to a holiday dinner. I enjoy entertaining in my home, and this year I have a new breakfast area and sunroom to enjoy with my loved ones. So here are my top tips for setting an informal table for brunch (and the big reveal of my new spaces!) as well as tips for a more formal holiday dinner.

Christmas Brunch

A more informal brunch or breakfast can be so much fun. It’s relaxed and family-oriented, so your decor and table settings should be, too.

TIP 1: Let People Serve Themselves

Create a fun punch (alcoholic or not) and allow your guests to serve themselves. This keeps the pressure off of you and also creates a laid-back feeling for your friends and family. You can also serve the meal buffet style, which will reduce the clutter of plates and serveware on your table.

TIP 2: Be Bold

Make it a bright morning with a bolder palette. And remember - holiday decor does not have to be red and green. Use colors that complement your room’s decor. Mix your patterns and create a vibrant color mix that will feel celebratory.

TIP 3: Go Natural

Add natural materials like bamboo and woven grasses to your table. It’s a fresh take on tabletop that will keep it from leaning to the formal side. And use a simpler arrangement for your florals. A lovely bouquet in the right color palette will add a great touch.

Holiday Dinner

I’m in the mood to dress up - both with my clothing and with my holiday decor. We’ve gone too long without being able to celebrate together, so I will have some friends and family over for a more formal dinner.

TIP 1: Bring It All Out

If there was ever a time to use the “good china,” this is it. Make your table as festive as possible with all the china, crystal, chargers, and linens. Remind your guests that you wanted to create a gorgeous table just for them. It will make them feels special, too.

TIP 2: Go Bigger and Bolder

For a more formal dinner, you can go bolder with your centerpieces and florals. Remember to leave space for your guests to be able to talk to others across the table, but fill the space in the center to add a luxe and glam look.

TIP 3: Raise a Glass

Offer a well-stocked bar for toasts and tipples. You can even appoint someone to be the official bartender for your soiree. Be sure to place a bar cart or bar tray well away from where you’re preparing dinner so there won’t be any traffic jams.

No matter how you decide to celebrate this year, remember the reason for the season. Have fun and enjoy the time with your family!

All the best,
