Warm by the Fire

The holidays are here - the perfect time to gather with your family around the fire and celebrate each other and the blessings we all have. I love to think about my clients at this time of year, enjoying the gathering spaces we’ve created for them.

The hearth has been the central place to get together in the home for millennia. The warmth of a fire gives a great ambiance for telling stories, sharing memories, and reading or playing games together. A room with a fireplace needs to welcome those gatherings, so I always design these rooms around that idea.

The most important element is plush seating - the most luxe and comfortable that you can get. This is probably where you will sit most often in the home, so it needs to be a great place to relax. Whether you choose sofas, chairs, or settees is up to your preference. If you’re a reader, you may want chairs with a light source. If you want to snuggle up with your kids, a long couch or sectional would be the way to go. And remember performance fabrics will help you avoid stains from children and pets.

Throws and pillows are also important, especially at this time of year. Choose textures that are soothing and soft, and be sure there are plenty of pillows for your back, to use as an armrest, or to rest your head for a quick snooze.

And, as you can see in the overhead photo above, I always ensure that there are tables within easy reach of every seat. You’ll need those for drinks, books, snacks, and games.
