It’s the time when we look back at the year that’s gone by and look forward to what’s coming next. This year has been a real rollercoaster, but one thing it’s done is refocused attention on our homes. From home offices to super-functional kitchens, we’ve definitely asked more of our homes this year than ever before. So what’s coming next? There are four design trends that I see coming in 2021 - let’s take a look.

1. Ocean Colors

Paint companies have all announced their color trends for 2021 and they run the gamut from a bronzed brown to the palest blue. But one thing all of the colors have in common is that they are inspired by nature. We are craving that idea of calm and wellness that we get from being outside, and interior colors help to give us that same feeling. I think the colors people will most want in their homes will include the quiet greens and serene blues that we see in oceans, rivers, and lakes. Water colors are good for relieving stress and making us feel safe - and that’s what we’ll want in 2021.

2. Biophilia

Speaking of nature, biophilia is the latest buzzword in interior design. It’s the idea that we need to better connect with plants and the outdoors, even if we’re stuck in our homes. Rather than being an afterthought, plants will become an important part of a room’s design. That includes views of plantings outdoors, too. Greenery is proven to lower blood pressure, freshen the air, and increase oxygen flow. That’s something we could all use in our homes as we emerge from a pandemic.

3. All-Season Outdoor Rooms

Being out in nature will be just as important in 2021. Outdoor rooms will be designed to withstand all seasons. So you’ll see more screened porches with cooling fans for summer in the deep South. Or fireplaces and covered terraces in the north. It won’t just be about putting lovely furniture in a backyard, but instead designing thoughtful spaces that will allow families to spend time together in an open-air setting. I love designing outdoor kitchens and living areas, so this is one trend I’m excited about.

4. Wellness Spaces

Are you seeing a trend? We’ve spent 2020 so focused on keeping ourselves out of harm’s way that we’ll be looking for ways to destress and increase our wellbeing in 2021. These spaces could be home gyms, meditation rooms, yoga studios, spa bathrooms, or indoor pools. Whatever makes you feel healthy in mind and body will be the key.

As you look through these trends and think about how your lifestyle has changed, let us know if you need help renovating your living spaces. We should all make a resolution for 2021 to be as happy and healthy as we can be in our homes.

All the best,

Kara
