4 Pro Tips for a Spa-Worthy Principal Bathroom

Heading to a spa for self-care is an incredible experience, perfect for relieving stress. We all need that more than ever now, so I pay careful attention to the principal bathroom in every home I design. Having that spa-worthy experience at home is more than a luxury - for so many it’s a necessity today! I have 4 things that I ensure are in every one of these bathrooms that I create. Let’s take a look…

1. Color Palette

Think about all of the luxe spas you’ve seen or enjoyed - there’s a very specific palette in each one that’s meant to soothe you. That’s exactly what you need in the primary bathroom, too. Think tranquil blues or soft greens, maybe even grays or creams. Whatever colors would most relax you are the ones that you want in this all-important space.

2. A Freestanding Tub

Fabulous freestanding tubs allow you to soak your cares away. I’m partial to the egg-shaped styles today that encircle you because they are so comfortable. There are a lot of high-tech details you can find in tubs, now, too. Like aromatherapy, sound therapy, light therapy, and those all-important soothing jets. This is an investment that will definitely pay off for your wellbeing.

3. A Serious Shower

Another therapeutic investment that’s worthwhile is a shower with all the bells and whistles. When it comes to making your selection, think about what would wash your cares away. That could be multiple shower heads, a steam shower, aromatherapy, or even waterproof speakers that are built right in. A non-negotiable for most of my clients is also a great seat in the shower.

4. Textural Tile

Tile can make a beautiful statement in the design of your bathroom, like the lovely hexagon tile I used above in a beach house I designed. But there’s more to this fantastic feature. Tile adds much-needed texture in a room that is mostly smooth surfaces. That texture is grounding and also soothing in its own way. I also like to use a more textured tile on a floor to help create a less slippery surface.
