4 Ways to Make a Great First Impression

My own front entry

As we get back to the wonderful habit of welcoming friends and family into our homes, it’s time to think about making an entrance. Of course a front door is important (I love my own home’s door, above). But your front entry is really the first impression guests will have for your home, so it should be more than an afterthought or a place to drop everything when you come in. Whether you have a vestibule, a framed entry, a front hall, or a door that opens right into a room, there are ways to ensure that your guests’ first impression is a good one.

1. Wow Factor

There should be a moment in your entry that will capture your guests’ attention. It could be an amazing wallpaper, a gorgeous piece of original art, a bright color, or even a statement light fixture. Give them something that is almost like an appetizer for what they’ll see in the rest of your house. If your home is super colorful, then the entry should give them bold color. If your home is elegant and traditional, try a beautiful antique table in the foyer. Make them say “wow!”

2. A Great Reflection

A mirror is not only a lovely touch in an entry, it can be a work of art in itself. Mirrors are so important in this space because they give your guests a spot to quickly touch up as they enter your home. And they also are great for you to check your look before you leave for the day. Search for antique mirrors or more modern frames that are bold and beautiful.

3. Table It

Every entry needs a table. It’s the perfect place to showcase flowers, plants, books, art and other items that will showcase your personality and what you love. I love the antique table that I used in a project above. It not only looks good, but it has three drawers that are perfect for hiding keys, mail, and clutter.

4. Step It Up

If your front door opens directly into stairs, there are still ways to give your guests a great view. I used a custom stair rail above to add visual interest to the steps, and I added glass and crystal sconces for an elegant touch. A curved console table mimics the soft sweep of the stairs, while a metal stool continues the soft gleam from the sconces. Add in a cute little dog and your guests will be charmed!
