Circle Up

Interior design is all about balance, symmetry, and harmony. Even if every detail isn’t immediately obvious to you when you enter a room, the design should be pleasing to the eye. That creates a welcoming feeling and a sense of calm. One way that designers create that harmony in a room is to balance shapes. The most common shapes in a home are of course rectangles and squares. To counter all of those straight lines and right angles, I love to bring in curves and circles.

In the bedroom I designed above, I was able to find an unusual piece of art that was created on a round canvas. That art, combined with the circular hardware, complements the straight lines of the walls and hardwood flooring.

In psychology, circles make you think of wholesomeness, harmony, and happiness. They are the shape of emojis, smiley faces, balls, balloons - things that make us smile. So it’s a great shape to use in an interior to provide that feeling of joy. I love the mirror above that’s composed of several connected circles. It’s sophisticated, but definitely brings a sense of fun.

I loved the art I curated for my clients above. The circles within the square frames are compelling with their repeating pattern. Creating a grid with a gallery wall also draws the eye to the circles, providing a strong focal point in the room.

Circles are also ethereal, especially when they create a vision of bubbles. In the dining room above, we had a lot of squared-off shapes: the table, the rug, the wall, the art. So I brought in a frothy, gorgeous light fixture to add some lightness and an airy quality.
