Home Work
There is one space in the home that clients are asking about more than ever this summer - the home office. It’s now a new fact of life that we are all working from home, some of us part time and many of us full time. And our kids are studying and attending school from home, too, even during the summer months. If you don’t have a dedicated space for a desk, you’re probably searching out the perfect place to work from home, or to be a great backdrop for your Zoom calls. Here are a few ideas for creating an office space in your home.
The Dining Room
No, this isn’t the perfect solution, but it works in a pinch. Many people don’t have another space they can dedicate to a home office, so the dining room table becomes a de facto desk. The key is to be sure you have a chair that will lift you to the right height and to have a great piece of art for all of your video conferences. How gorgeous is that red in the dining room above? It would look amazing on RingCentral.
The Family Room
When you have several family members working from home, or kids who are also home schooling, it can be a scramble for dedicated desk space. In an open-plan room, you could have the space for multiple stations, like in the room I designed above. With lots of storage and room for two computers, this is the perfect solution for a working family.
The Den
If you have a secondary gathering space in your home - like a library, a den, or a home bar - it can easily be converted into a multifunctional space. Adding a work surface or desk to existing cabinetry or bookshelves isn’t difficult at all, and it can create a quiet space for online classes or Zoom calls.
The Guest Room
Sadly, we aren’t really using our guest rooms for guests anymore, so creating a home office space in this room makes a lot of sense. This room offers privacy, and a desk can also serve as a bedside table. It’s a win-win for home workers.
The Dedicated Home Office
This, of course, is the ultimate goal. A gorgeously designed - and permanent - home office. If you can commit to the space, converting an unused room into an office makes a lot of sense today. For this option, plan for as much storage as the room can hold. That helps hide the printer, papers, files, scanner, and other tools you need to make this space work for you. And a stylish desk makes all that work much more fun!
