Organizing Spaces for Family-Friendly Homes
In family homes, keeping your rooms chic and organized can be a struggle. There are always toys, books, throws, and more that need a home, too. I love to create smart solutions for my clients that have kids and pets, so they can have a gorgeous home and still have it function as a warm and welcoming place for every member of the family. The key is to have organized spaces that help keep things neat and tidy. Here are just a few of my top design solutions.
Double the Function
One of my favorite ways to keep rooms tidy and looking lovely is to provide furniture that can be used as storage, like the chests you see on either side of the window above. They’re beautiful, but they’re also very functional. They can store board games, throws, magazines, or anything else that might clutter up a living room.
Stylish Shelves
Having great shelving units can really help keep books, albums, and games organized. When I create custom shelves or built-ins for my clients, I also include some drawers or doors so any disorganized items can be hidden. It’s also a great idea to use baskets on shelves to tuck away things you don’t want on display.
For the Kids
It’s important for kids to have their own spaces, and that includes storage for their toys and books. When I work with my clients’ kids to design their rooms, I help them select pieces that will keep items organized.. It makes them feel like they have ownership for where their favorite things will be stored.
Four-Legged Family
Anyone who has a pet knows that they can create as much clutter as a toddler with all their toys, treats, and brushes. For my Chief Barkitect Penny, I designed a place all her own in my house. It gives her a feeding station, her own stylish crate, and cabinets for her food, leashes, and other items.
The Extras
For clients with large families, I always suggest extras that can make a big difference. Those include double dishwashers, a drinks fridge to keep your main fridge organized, and even a second microwave for snacks and popcorn. If you have the space, a dedicated snack pantry is also a big plus. These extras keep your kitchen a bit more under control.
A Space of Your Own
Just like the kids, you definitely need your own space in your home. It should be a calm and clean oasis that is a kid-free zone. This gives you a place where you can feel in control (and as parents, that’s key!), as well as a place to store your own collections, art, and “clutter.”
Use these ideas to keep your home both organized and family friendly. And if you need help with smart design solutions, give my team a call.
All the best,
