A Staycation Destination
Travel to exotic locations - or even the beach - doesn’t seem to be on the agenda for most people this summer. The pandemic and a continuing rise in Covid cases in many states has caused a lot of us to plan for staycations rather than vacations. But that doesn’t mean you can’t have a luxurious and restful experience. You just have to create the perfect destination. When I work with my clients, I talk to them about designing outdoor spaces that offer “rooms” or zones that match their interior spaces, like a living room, a dining room, and even a kitchen. It helps create the ultimate getaway in your own backyard.
The Outdoor Living Room
Most backyards have some sort of outdoor seating area, but to really take it to the next level you need to think about how your interior living room is designed. In the outdoor space, include luxe seating with plenty of pillows, a rug to provide softness and to define the space, and a table (or two!) for drinks and books. A throw is perfect for those cooler summer evenings. And, as you can see in the top photo, you can even have a TV in your outdoor living room. Make it as comfortable and inviting as those incredible resorts you’ve been dreaming about. That’s the key to the perfect destination for your staycation.
The Outdoor Dining Room
Dining al fresco is such a treat in the summertime. Step up your dining game this summer with a full dining area that can accommodate the whole family - no more balancing a plate on your knees! I love the trestle design of the table I selected for my clients above. It is lovely enough to be equally at home inside, but this teak table will last for years even on an uncovered patio. Add lighting and plants or flowers to the table to create atmosphere and style. And don’t forget outdoor speakers for your favorite playlists. This should be a space that makes you want to linger with your coffee or a glass of chilled wine.
The Outdoor Kitchen
The ultimate in living outdoors is having a dedicated kitchen. Going beyond a grill in the grass, an outdoor kitchen gives you every comfort within easy reach. In the kitchen I designed above, I included a working sink, a refrigerator, a bar cart, plenty of prep space, and a top-of-the-line grill station. Whether you’re preparing a family feast, or just grabbing a drink and a snack, an outdoor kitchen like this one is designed to serve. It is the ultimate in outdoor living.
Which outdoor room would you love to have in your backyard? We can make it happen!
All the best,
