Pro Tricks - and Treats

I’m often asked what my top tips are to make the most of your investment in your home. And I do have a few tricks of the trade that will help make your home look magazine-worthy. So in honor of Halloween, I’ll treat you (sorry!) to some of my favorite tips.

1. Go Higher

Take your kitchen cabinets all the way to the ceiling. Those narrow spaces between cabinets and the ceiling are just dust collectors! Instead, use every square inch you have for storage and then close any gaps with gorgeous molding. It looks much more professional, too.

2. Buy Bigger

Using a rug that’s too small for the space is a rookie mistake. You want a rug that’s large enough to define the area, and that will have room for your furniture. That may mean a rug that’s at least 8x10 in a smaller room, and a 9x12, 10x14, or even a custom size in a larger room.

3. Invest Smarter

Invest in the items that are used the most, and that’s especially true for upholstery. If you have a sofa or chair that you know will get a lot of “sits,” then you definitely want to be sure you buy the highest-quality pieces that you can. You want comfort and functionality, so pay more for something that will last.

4. Control Clutter

This is a tip that really does help give your home that professional look. You should have enough storage to help you hide away your small appliances, pots, pans, and other counter clutter in your kitchen. If not, at least find a way to make those items look well organized. A home that’s free of clutter (or as much as possible) is also proven to be less stressful, and couldn’t we all use less stress today?

5. A Natural Idea

Bring in cut flowers, arrangements of branches, or plants to give you a breath of fresh air in each room. It’s a great way to brighten your spaces and they’ll give your mood an uplift, too.
